How to choose the right type of dye in webbing dyeing
In the webbing dyeing process, the choice of dye type is a key factor in determining the dye quality and webbing performance. Different types of dyes have their own unique chemical properties and dyeing characteristics. Only by comprehensively considering the material, usage scenario, dyeing process requirements and other factors of the webbing can we select suitable dyeing to ensure that the webbing dyeing effect is ideal and meet market demand.
1. Select dye according to the webbing material
(I) Natural fiber webbing
Cotton and linen webbing: Cotton and linen belong to cellulose fibers, and reactive dyes are commonly used choices. The reactive dye can react chemically with the hydroxyl groups on the cellulose fibers to form covalent bonds. This binding method makes the dye firmly bond with the fibers. The dyed webbing has a high washing-resistant color fastness, and the colors are bright and uniform. In addition, direct dyes can also be used for cotton and linen webbing dyeing. It is combined with fibers through van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds. The dyeing process is relatively simple and the cost is low, but the color fastness is slightly inferior to that of reactive dyes. It is suitable for products with no particularly high requirements for color fastness.
Silk, wool webbing: Silk and wool are protein fibers, and acid dyes are ideal. In acidic dyes, acidic groups such as sulfonic acid groups and carboxyl groups in the dye molecules bind to the amino groups in protein fibers, with a high dyeing rate, bright and bright color, and less damage to the fibers. Metal complex dyes are also commonly used in wool webbing dyeing. After being combined with wool fiber, they have good light resistance, wash resistance and friction color fastness, which is suitable for making high-quality wool textile belt products.
(II) Chemical fiber webbing
Polyester webbing: Dispersed dye is a special dye for polyester webbing dyeing. Polyester fibers have a tight structure and regular molecular arrangement, making it difficult for ordinary dyes to enter the fibers. The dispersed dye is dispersed in the dye solution in the form of tiny particles under high temperature and high pressure (about 130°C) or carrier dyeing conditions. It enters the amorphous area of the polyester fiber through dissolution and diffusion, and combines van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds with the fiber molecules, thus giving the webbing good color fastness and bright colors.
Nylon webbing: Nylon webbing can be dyed with acid dyes or dispersed dyes. When dyeing acid dyes, it combines with the amino group in nylon fibers to obtain a higher dyeing rate and bright colors; dyeing dispersed dyes can utilize its diffusion properties under high temperature and high pressure to allow the dye to penetrate into the fibers and improve color fastness, especially suitable for nylon webbing products that require high washing and friction color fastness.
(III) Blended textile belt
Blend webbing is made of two or more fibers. When choosing dyes, the dyeing characteristics of multiple fibers must be taken into account. For example, for cotton-polyester blended webbing, a one-bath and two-step method can be used, first dyeing the polyester part with dispersed dye, and then dyeing the cotton fiber part with reactive dye; a special dye for polyester one-bath method can also be selected to simplify the dyeing process and improve production efficiency, but pay attention to the dyeing effect and color fastness of the dye on the two fibers.

2. Select dye according to the webbing usage scenario
(1) Weaving belt for daily clothing
Webbing tapes used in daily clothing, such as clothing decorative belts, belts, etc., have certain requirements for the color fastness and color brightness of dyes. Since this type of webbing will frequently contact human skin and may undergo multiple washings, dyes with high color fastness to wash and friction resistance should be selected, such as reactive dyes, reducing dyes, etc., to ensure that the webbing can still maintain bright colors and not fade after long-term use and washing. At the same time, to meet the needs of fashionable design, dyes with rich colors and complete chromatography can be selected to achieve diversified color matching.
(II) Weaving belt for outdoor products
Weaving tapes for outdoor products, such as hiking straps, tent straps, etc., need to be used in complex outdoor environments and faces many challenges such as sun exposure, rain erosion, and friction. Therefore, the dye has extremely high requirements for the light-resistant color fastness, water-resistant color fastness and friction-resistant color fastness. Dispersed dyes, sulfurized dyes, etc. have good light and water resistance, and are suitable for outdoor webbing dyeing; at the same time, special additives can be added or post-treatment technology can be used to further improve the overall color fastness of the webbing and ensure that the webbing can maintain a good appearance and performance for a long time in outdoor environments.
(III) Webbing for special functions
Some webbing with special functions, such as medical webbing, flame retardant webbing, etc., in addition to having requirements for dyeing effects, also need to meet specific functional needs. Medical webbing requires that the dye is non-toxic, harmless, non-irritating, and has good washing and disinfection resistance. You can choose special dyes that have been certified by environmental protection. When selecting dyes, flame retardant webbing must ensure that the dye will not affect the flame retardant performance of the webbing and meet certain color fastness requirements. It is usually necessary to cooperate with professional dye suppliers to develop special flame retardant dyeing processes and dyes.
3. Select dyes in combination with dyeing process requirements
(I) Dyeing equipment and process limitations
Different dyeing equipment and processes have different applicability to dyes. For example, when dyeing with an overflow dyeing machine, since the webbing is dyed in a relaxed state, the uniform dyeing requirements for the dye are high, so dyeing should be selected, such as high-temperature reactive dyes in reactive dyes; while dyeing machine dyeing is suitable for small batches and multiple varieties of production, and dyeing can be flexibly selected according to the specific webbing material and color requirements. In addition, some new dyeing processes, such as ultrasonic dyeing, microwave dyeing, etc., also have special requirements for the performance of dyes, and it is necessary to choose dyes that can adapt to these new processes.
(II) Dyeing cost and efficiency
When choosing dyes, dyeing costs and production efficiency must also be considered. Some dyes are expensive but have superior dyeing performance and are suitable for high-quality and high-value-added webbing products; while for ordinary large-scale webbing, dyes with relatively low prices and simple dyeing process can be selected to reduce production costs. At the same time, choosing dyes with high dyeing rate and short dyeing time can improve production efficiency and reduce energy consumption and labor costs.
When choosing the right dye type in webbing dyeing, you need to comprehensively consider various factors such as webbing material, usage scenarios and dyeing technology. Only by deeply understanding the characteristics of different dyes and choosing based on actual needs can we achieve ideal dyeing effects and produce high-quality webbing products to meet the diverse needs of the market.
