How to choose the right dye in yarn dyeing process

In the yarn dyeing process, the choice of dye is like the key key to imparting the color soul to the yarn, which directly determines the dyeing effect, color fastness and the quality of the textile. Faced with a wide variety of dyes, multiple factors need to be considered comprehensively. Next, we will discuss in-depth methods and key points for choosing suitable dyes from the aspects of yarn material, dyeing needs, cost-effectiveness, etc.

1. Select dye according to the yarn material

(I) Natural fiber yarn

Cotton and linen yarn: Cotton and linen belong to cellulose fibers, and reactive dyes are its commonly used choices. Reactive dyes can react chemically with cellulose fibers to form covalent bonds, and have high color fastness, especially the color fastness to wash, and the dyed yarns are bright and uniform in color. In addition, direct dyes can also be used for dyeing cotton and linen yarns. The dyeing process is relatively simple and the cost is low, but the color fastness is slightly inferior to that of reactive dyes. It is suitable for products with no particularly high requirements for color fastness.

Silk, wool yarn: Silk and wool are both protein fibers, and acid dyes are ideal. In acidic or weakly acidic dyes, acidic dyes can bind to the amino groups in protein fibers, with a high dyeing rate, bright and bright color, and less damage to the fibers. At the same time, metal complex dyes are also often used for wool yarn dyeing. After being combined with wool fibers, they have good light resistance, wash resistance and friction color fastness, which is suitable for making high-quality wool spinning products.

(II) Chemical fiber yarn

Polyester Yarn: Dispersed dye is a special dye for dyeing polyester yarn. Polyester fibers have a tight structure and regular molecular arrangement, making it difficult for ordinary dyes to enter the fibers. The dispersed dye is dispersed in the dye liquid in the form of tiny particles under high temperature and high pressure or carrier dyeing conditions, and can impart good color fastness and bright colors to the yarn.

Nylon Yarn: Nylon Yarn can be dyed with acid dyes or dispersed dyes. When dyeing acid dyes, it combines with the amino group in nylon fibers to obtain a higher dyeing rate and bright colors; dyeing dispersed dyes can utilize its diffusion properties under high temperature and high pressure to allow the dye to penetrate into the fibers and improve color fastness, especially suitable for nylon products that require high washing and friction color fastness.

(III) Blended yarn

Blend yarns are made of two or more fibers. When choosing dyes, the dyeing characteristics of multiple fibers must be taken into account. For example, for cotton-polyester blended yarn dyeing, one bath and two-step method can be used, first dyeing the polyester part with dispersed dye, and then dyeing the cotton fiber part with reactive dye; you can also choose a dye for polyester one bath method to simplify the dyeing process and improve production efficiency, but pay attention to the dyeing effect and color fastness of the dye on the two fibers.

2. Select dye according to dyeing requirements

(I) Color fastness requirements

Different textile usage scenarios require different color fastness. For clothes that are frequently washed, such as underwear, T-shirts, etc., you need to choose dyes with high washing color fastness, such as reactive dyes and reducing dyes; outdoor textiles, such as awnings, mountaineering suits, you should pay attention to the light-resistant color fastness of the dyes, and dispersed dyes and sulfurized dyes perform well in this regard; for textiles that require frequent friction, such as jeans, backpack straps, etc., you should choose dyes with high friction color fastness, such as direct friction dyes.

(II) Color effect requirements

If you pursue bright and bright colors, you can choose reactive dyes and acid dyes; if you want to obtain deep and heavy colors, vulcanized dyes and reducing dyes are more suitable. In addition, some special color effects, such as imitation and deterioration effects, can be used for sulfurized dyes; gradient colors can be achieved by controlling the concentration of the dye, dyeing time and other process parameters, combined with the characteristics of different dyes.

(III) Environmental protection requirements

With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, environmentally friendly dyes are becoming more and more widely used. When choosing dyes, products that meet environmental standards should be given priority, such as azo-free dyes, low-formaldehyde dyes, etc. These dyes are less harmful to the environment and human health during production and use, and can meet the requirements of modern textiles for green and environmental protection.

3. Select dyes in a comprehensive cost-effective way

(I) Dye price

Different types of dyes have large prices. Generally speaking, direct dyes and sulfur dyes are relatively low in prices, suitable for products that are sensitive to costs and have low requirements for color fastness; reactive dyes and dispersed dyes are moderately priced and widely used; while some special functional dyes, such as functional antibacterial dyes, fluorescent dyes, etc., are relatively expensive and are suitable for high-end and special needs products. When selecting dyes, you need to select high-cost-performance dyes based on product positioning and budget, and while ensuring dyeing quality.

(II) Dyeing process cost

The complexity of the dyeing process can also affect the cost. Some dye dyes require high temperature and high pressure, special additives or longer dyeing time, which will increase energy consumption, equipment loss and labor costs; while dyes with simple dyeing processes, such as direct dyes, can reduce production costs. Therefore, when selecting dyes, we must comprehensively consider the increase in cost brought by the dyeing process and weigh the relationship between dye performance and cost.

Selecting the right dye in the yarn dyeing process is a systematic and critical task, and requires comprehensive consideration from many aspects such as yarn material, dyeing requirements, cost-effectiveness, etc. Only by accurately matching dyes, yarns and dyeing needs can ideal dyeing effects be achieved and the quality and market competitiveness of textiles can be improved.
